Plastic pollution refers to the accumulation of plastic waste in the environment, particularly in land, rivers, and oceans, due to improper disposal and management. Because most plastics do not biodegrade, they persist in the environment for decades or even centuries.
Globally, an estimated 400 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated each year, of which around 11 million tonnes enter the oceans annually. If current trends continue, this could increase to 29 million tonnes per year by 2040.
Plastic pollution poses a serious environmental challenge as it contaminates ecosystems, disrupts natural processes, and contributes to long-term environmental degradation. It is also increasingly recognized as a cross-cutting issue affecting climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
In Bangladesh, rapid urbanization, increasing plastic consumption, and gaps in waste management systems have contributed to rising levels of plastic pollution. The country generates approximately 800,000–820,000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, with a significant portion not being properly managed.
In major urban centres like Dhaka, around 646 tonnes of plastic waste are generated every day, yet only about 37% is recycled, while the rest is disposed of in landfills, waterways, or the open environment.
Single-use plastics are a major contributor to this issue. Bangladesh generates around 87,000 tonnes of single-use plastic waste annually, and studies indicate that up to 96% of this is discarded directly without proper management.

Due to inadequate segregation, limited infrastructure, and reliance on informal systems, a large share of plastic waste leaks into rivers and coastal areas. As a riverine and deltaic country, Bangladesh is particularly vulnerable, with plastic waste easily transported through waterways, contributing to marine pollution, urban flooding, and environmental degradation.
These trends highlight that while plastic consumption in Bangladesh is still lower than many developed countries, waste mismanagement places the country among those most affected by plastic pollution, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated action.
